La Vall de Laguar<\/strong> is an area situated in the Marina Alta region near\nBenidorm where you can enjoy numerous\noutdoor activities accompanied by unbeatable views. <\/strong>It is comprised of\nthree villages – Benimaurell, Fleix and Campell – which are all between 300 and\n437 metres above sea level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This area is home to incredible places, including the Barranco\ndel Infierno hiking route, which is one of the region\u2019s greenest natural\nlandscapes. La Vall de Laguar\u2019s history<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

La Vall de Laguar\u2019s history starts in the 13th century under the\ngovernance of the Moorish commander, Al-Azraq, when it revolted against the\nconquering attacks of King James I of Aragon. In 1276, Al-Azraq died in a\nrebellion, and between 1277 and 1278, Alfonso, the son of King James I,\nfinished with the uprising once and for all following the death of his father. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The areas were shared among the Moors who supported\nKing James I. This caused another rebellion by the Christians, which led to the\nMoors\u2019 expulsion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Vall de Laguar was the last area to be abandoned by the Moors and\nfinally, in 1611, it was repopulated by farmers. Today, all of its history, its charming places and its peaceful natural\nsetting ensure tourism is one of the area\u2019s strong points<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things to do in La Vall de Laguar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A visit to La Vall de Laguar<\/strong> is synonymous with a love for hiking and the outdoors<\/strong>. Attempting a hiking route through this valley, while taking in its incredible views, is something you need to try. Take note of the places you simply must visit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Barranco del Infierno<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Barranco del Infierno is a spectacular canyon that\nhas been carved by the Girona River over the course of thousands of years. This\ntrail is also called \u2018Hiking\u2019s\nCathedral\u2019 <\/strong>as it involves more than 6,800 steps. Impressive, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail is based on a circular route that will allow\nyou to explore its cultural and historic heritage. You will discover a large\nnumber of caves and numerous cave paintings. If you love adventures, you\u2019ll be\nhappy to know that you can also try canyoning at certain points. Of course,\nalong the way you can enjoy the incredible\nsurrounding scenery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las Adzaharas Castle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This Islamic\ncastle is situated near Benimaurell<\/strong>, atop a rocky spur standing more than 500\nmetres above sea level. It is formed by two parts, each with a rectangular\nfloor plan, that have been partially excavated into the rock. Some remnants of\nits walls can still be seen, in addition to an old Arabian underground\nreservoir and part of a tower.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the remains of pottery items from\ndifferent eras have been found around the castle. It\u2019s well worth a visit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casota Tower<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is a 12th-century\ndefensive tower <\/strong>situated near Campell<\/strong>.\nFrom here, you can see all of the area\u2019s fortresses, such as Las Adzaharas\nCastle and Denia Castle. If it\u2019s a clear day you may even see the island of\nIbiza.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a rectangular building with walls 1.19 metres\nthick, for which reason it is considered a military construction: a tower with a strategic location used to\nwatch over and defend the area.\n<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Cavall Verd\u2019s mountains<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 1609, the last Moors in the valley were defeated in\nEl Cavall Verd\u2019s mountains, which is why they are so important historically.\nThey include a peak that is 793 metres tall, pertaining to the Serra del Peny\u00f3\nMountain Range in the southern part of La Vall de Laguar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re more daring, you enjoy hiking, and you\ndecide to climb this peak, you can enjoy\nalmost a bird\u2019s eye view of the mountain landscapes and Alicante\u2019s coastline. <\/strong>You\nwon\u2019t forget the experience in a hurry! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campell, Fleix, Benimaurell and their churches<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The area of La Vall de Laguar comprises three villages. Campell <\/strong>has around 300 inhabitants and it\u2019s worth visiting its church, Santa Ana. Fleix<\/strong>, where La Valle de Laguar\u2019s local government is located, is home to approximately 200 people. This village has been built around the Church of Santa Teresa and San Pascual. Lastly, Benimaurell <\/strong>contains 260 inhabitants and is presided over by the 16th-century Church of Los Santos Cosme and Dami\u00e1n. Which one will you be visiting first?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hiking in La Vall de Laguar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

La Vall de Laguar is definitely a hiker\u2019s paradise. What makes us say that? The fact this valley has numerous trails. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PR-CV 147 trail, \u2018Hiking\u2019s Cathedral\u2019<\/strong> through the Barranco\ndel Infierno, is around 14.5km in length and of medium difficulty. The PR-CV\n181 trail, Felix \u2013 Peny\u00f3\nRoig<\/strong>, is a difficult 25km trail. Alternatively, you can try the\nVuelta a la Laguna<\/strong>,\nwhich is a circular trail from Benimaurell covering around 8km of average\ndifficulty. If you would like a shorter route that is no less important, try\nthe Sierra de Garga<\/strong>\ntrail of 6.5km or the descent\nto the \u00cdsber Strait<\/strong> via Campell, which is around 6km.
